Description

Black bodies are regularly hindered in a white world, women’s bodies are shielded and slowed down in a misogynistic world, fat bodies do not fit into a world that is tailored to the average body, wheelchair-bound bodies cannot use the stairs, and depressed bodies become inert because the world no longer invites them.

The examples show that bodies never stand alone. They always function in relation to other bodies and to the environment. Yet the view is still common that you can solve physical problems by focusing on shortcomings in the body, in thoughts or in the behavior of individuals. Philosopher Jenny Slatman explains that this approach does not work sufficiently. More attention is needed to the material relations in which bodies exist. She thus advocates a new view of embodiment.

A fundamentally different view of health, illness, disabilities and social exclusion
