Hey there!
My name is Lidvine. After obtaining my master’s degree in Medicine, I decided to specialize in Medical Genetics. During my training, I noticed that little attention was paid to diversity in healthcare in lectures. Statements were regularly made about certain racialized groups, often without the necessary context or nuance. My own experiences with racism, both during my training and during my internships, reinforced my desire to make a difference.
For my master’s thesis, I therefore decided to investigate whether medical students experience discrimination based on their gender and/or ethnicity. During that same period, I learned about AfroMedica. The then-young organization immediately appealed to me, and I was convinced that together we could make an important contribution to positive change. That is why I decided to join this group of passionate people.
Since 2021, I have been involved in various projects within AfroMedica, ranging from organizing events to collaborating with educational institutions and writing opinion pieces and a open letter. What I appreciate most about this is engaging in conversation with others and sharing knowledge. I find it particularly valuable to gain new insights together.
Thanks to being involved with AfroMedica, I’ve gotten to know a lot of inspiring and warm people. First of all, my fellow board members, but also the people we’ve worked with and hopefully will continue to work with for a long time to come. With AfroMedica, I hope to contribute to a more inclusive healthcare system, where every voice is heard and every patient is seen.
